What "international yacht club membership" usually means
The phrase covers four fairly different products, and they are worth separating before comparing any of them to SplitClub.
- A traditional yacht club with reciprocal privileges. You join one club, pay an initiation fee and annual dues, and its reciprocity agreements let you use the facilities of affiliated clubs abroad. What travels is the clubhouse — the bar, the dock, the launch. Not a boat, and not a day out.
- Fractional ownership or a yacht syndicate. You buy a share of a specific hull and receive an allocation of weeks. It is genuinely international only if the operator repositions the vessel between seasons, and it is a capital commitment with a depreciating asset attached.
- A charter membership or credit program. You pay an upfront fee for preferential rates or a pool of charter credits with a broker network. You are still booking whole boats, still paying for the deck whether or not it is full, and still assembling the guest list yourself.
- A social club that happens to run boat days. Access is the product, the water is an occasional program item, and the yachting is thin.
All four share one blind spot. They solve access to a vessel. None of them solve who is standing on it with you — and on a yacht day, that is the variable that decides whether the day was worth the money.

How SplitClub is different
SplitClub treats the yacht day as the unit, not the yacht. The club curates the day and the group, prices the whole activity, then splits it across the members on board. What each member owes is their Activity Contribution — a single, one-time contribution for that one activity on that one date. You are not hiring a vessel and hoping to fill it, and you are not buying a membership tier. You are contributing to a day that has already been designed, alongside people who were reviewed before they got there.
Three consequences follow from that, and they are the whole argument for the model:
- Nobody underwrites the boat. Whoever organizes a normal boat hire fronts the full cost and then chases their friends. In the club there is no organizer, so there is no debt and no group chat.
- Vetting can be the gate instead of price. Once the activity is split across a deck, the barrier to entry stops being the size of the cheque and starts being the application. That is the intended trade.
- Unfilled capacity stops being waste. A twelve-seat boat leaving the dock with five people aboard is capacity nobody recovers. Matching a curated day to a vetted group is, underneath the polish, a scheduling and allocation problem — which is exactly the kind of problem software is good at.
There is no initiation fee, no annual dues, no mooring, no subscription and no boat-ownership requirement. You make one Activity Contribution for each day you actually go on, and nothing else.
How the membership works, step by step
- 1. Apply. Membership is by application in the SplitClub iOS app, in every city. Each application is reviewed individually.
- 2. Browse the curated calendar. Every day on the board is chosen and programmed by the club — a boat, a route, a start time, a format. No listings, no brokers, no negotiating.
- 3. Make the Activity Contribution. A single one-time contribution for that activity, on that date. Not a deposit, not a due, not a share of a boat. It's shown on the day's card in the app before you confirm.
- 4. The day funds, then it sails. Payment runs through our state-of-the-art payment processing system and is held until the day is fully funded. A day that does not fill does not sail, and contributions are not charged through.
- 5. Show up. The boat, the crew, the route and the group are handled. That is the entire promise.
