Miami Bass on the water.

Programmed as a heritage format rather than a weekly one, usually inside a hip hop day. It is the single hardest thing to reproduce properly on open water, and the club treats it as a system question first.

125–145 BPM · Miami, mid-1980s

Miami Bass is programmed on request rather than sitting on the fixed calendar. A member or a host proposes a date, and SplitClub sources the vessel, the crew and the sound around it — the cost of the day is then split across the group that claims the places.

The sound

The Roland TR-808 kick drum pushed until it distorts, fast breakbeats, and call-and-response vocals. Miami bass is the only major electronic genre invented in this city, and its sub-bass DNA runs directly into modern trap, Baile funk and half the low end in contemporary pop.

Miami Bass in Miami

This is Miami's own genre, built here in the mid-1980s and carried nationally by the crews working out of Liberty City and Overtown. Its influence is much larger than its current club presence — the 808 sound that defines contemporary rap worldwide traces back through this city.

How the club programs it

Programmed as a heritage format rather than a weekly one, usually inside a hip hop day. It is the single hardest thing to reproduce properly on open water, and the club treats it as a system question first.

Every SplitClub day works the same way underneath the music. The club arranges one vessel for one date, with its captain and crew, and programs the route, the hours and the sound. Members claim single places rather than hiring a boat. Contributions are held through our state-of-the-art payment processing system until the day is fully funded — if it does not fill, it does not sail and nobody is charged.

Frequently asked questions

What is Miami bass?

An 808-driven electronic genre invented in Miami in the mid-1980s, defined by extreme sub-bass and fast breakbeats. It is the direct ancestor of a great deal of modern rap production.

Does the club program it?

Usually as a segment inside a hip hop day rather than as a standalone format. Standalone days can be proposed.

Why is it hard to do on a boat?

It is almost entirely sub-bass, and open air absorbs low frequencies faster than anything else. It needs a system specified for it.
